How Tech Can Augment, Not Replace, Human Connection
May 12, 2022 by Dafna Presler
Prepare yourself for a controversial statement… Ready?
ElliQ is not the right product for everyone.
That’s right - you may expect us to “sell, sell, sell” but the reality is that ElliQ can make a significant impact on the lives of seniors, but not every senior.
Occasionally we hear from folks who think it’s unfortunate that a device is providing companionship for older adults. In response, we have a few points to make:
- Technology should augment - never replace - human connection
We simply don’t buy into the idea that robots will take over the world. While we do believe that there are incredible benefits to the functionality and sophisticated capabilities of products like ElliQ, we have never and would never intend for a device to replace human connection.
ElliQ was designed to be there when loved ones and caregivers can’t be. To fill the gaps and provide engagement, insights, and a peace of mind for the users and their families.
Consider this. Attending a family event in person is obviously a better experience than attending via video chat. But if you’re unable to physically attend - wouldn’t attending virtually be better than not attending at all? In a similar way, staying engaged and connected in-person is ideal, but may not be logistically realistic for some. Think of ElliQ as a tool or resource, not as a replacement for real people.
- Support systems vary for every person (strength, size, proximity)
If a senior is lucky enough to have a strong support system of loved ones or if they have the financial means to hire professional caregivers or aides, they may not need ElliQ!
But it is important to remember that not everyone is fortunate enough to have family members to live with or constantly visit - maybe those family members have full time jobs and/or children of their own, or perhaps they live across the country and can’t travel back and forth.
For those that have a strong appetite for social engagement, but simply not as many people in their care circle to fulfill their needs, a product like ElliQ may be able to stand in from time to time and supplement! - Stigmatizing a solution only stigmatizes the problem more
When folks pass judgment about a solution without considering the whole picture, the seniors that might really benefit from it may feel embarrassed or unsure about whether they should even evaluate the product for themselves. Loneliness is already a stigmatized issue, so let’s be open-minded about any tools and resources that others may find useful!
If you’re a senior that is socially engaged and surrounded by a wonderful support system, take a moment to reflect on how fortunate you are - that is truly amazing! If you could benefit from a little extra help or wish you had someone to chat with more consistently throughout the day, we’d encourage you to explore ElliQ. Regardless, we hope you’ll join us on our journey to help empower healthy, happy aging - so be sure to follow us on social media and share your feedback with us in the comments!
